National Day of Mourning

Why are we having this?
There is no precedent for National Days of this sort in Australia. We are all affected in some way by the events of Dec 26th, but making a national response is unAustralian.
Howard's anouncment makes it clear that he thinks of it primarily in a religious way. For a nation that doesn't attend church this is a big imposition of his thinking on the whole of Australia. Too much.
