The Movies, The Music, The Review

Went to see the production that Cameron is in last night at Beenleigh.

I've got to say that if Cameron wasn't in it, I wouldn't have gone. The music from the movies does not interest me as such. However, we went.....

The singing was of a standard that might be expcted from an amateur group. The perfomers were enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed themselves. Yes there were wrong notes and off-key passages, but this wasn't the Sydney Opera House. Cameron sang well.

The choreography was limited. Many of the moves were reminiscent of Sweet Charity, the previous production. Can no-one tapdance or juggle or ride a unicycle?

The musical arrangements were fine, showed some imagination but did overwhelm the singers at times.

What really let the show down was the poor direction, both musical and stage. Singers were mismatched with songs. Diction was poor and expression was limited. There was no continuity to the performance. Too many black-outs for too long. The loose threads linking the songs were OK but more visual links and a greater understanding of theatre would have produced a more entertaining evening.

The end

Are we at the end of a civilization phase. Has the renaissance run out of new ideas?
This is prompted by the suggesion that there could be teaching-only universities. With no research there will be nothing new to teach. We will stagnate and become prey to those who can manipulate fixed ideas the best. Unfortunatley this means the religious ones among us who already know the truth.
